Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
