Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – after the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately five percent.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no comment on this. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports movie to date.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
