Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
