EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
