A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
